About the Artist

Artistic Statement

I am a watercolour artist exploring the interplay between light and dark, spontaneity and structure, and emptiness and fullness. I draw influence from both Western landscape traditions and Chinese calligraphic techniques to depict landscapes and urbanscapes with a sense of mood and balance. With all of my pieces, I strive to achieve a sense of overall harmony underpinned by dynamic, lively passages.

Biography

Zachary Rowswell is a Canadian watercolour artist whose work explores the relationship between light and shadow, structure and spontaneity, and the meeting point of Western and Chinese artistic traditions. His paintings focus primarily on landscapes and urbanscapes, drawing inspiration from places of personal significance as well as interesting locations from his travels.

In addition to his watercolour practice, Zachary has studied Chinese calligraphy and martial arts for many years, influences that inform his approach to rhythmic brushwork and composition. Through his work, he seeks to create atmospheric paintings that balance movement and stillness. He is currently studying the Xieyi tradition of Chinese painting and hopes to draw on influences from that style in future works.

Zachary lives in Toronto with his wife and daughter.
